Instructions for Applicants

Please read the following instructions before you submit your application.
Please follow the instructions given below if you require to submit an application for obtaining ethical review for a research project involving animals. Refer Instructions for payment for rates of payment for reviewing your application. Please note that your application will not be processed until confirmation of payment has been received.

  • You need to fill in Parts I, II, and III of the Application.
  • Parts I and parts II are common for all applicants.
  • Depending on your research organisms, you will need to fill in Form A, B, or C of Part III. See below to select the correct form for Part III.
    • Part III Form A: If your research organisms are to be housed in a cage/ pen/ pond/ tank or any other type of enclosure under the responsibility of the researchers during any part of the proposed study; you need to fill Form A.
    • Part III Form B: If you need to handle your research organisms for obtaining samples or data (this includes handling animals in a hospital/ clinical setting), but will not be kept in an enclosure for the duration of the study; you need to fill Form B.
    • Part III Form C: If you do not need to handle or keep your research organisms in an enclosure for the duration of the study (i.e. observational studies with or without interventions); you need to fill Form C.
    • If your project has research organisms under more than one category stated above, please fill all relevant forms under Part III. (You may omit the repetitions and fill in the relevant information in the additional forms).
    • If your research organisms fall under any other category than those stated above, please fill the most appropriate form.
  • It is required to attach a detailed project proposal with your application.
  • If you require to obtain consent and/or give an information sheet for owners of the research organisms, please use the formats of the Consent Form and Information Sheet which can be downloaded from the website. You can modify these to include the information relevant to your study but all the parts which are included in the formats need to be retained.
  • Please hand over (or send by registered post/ internal mail) two hard copies of all the above documents (see checklist in Part I), duly signed by all investigators, to the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, University of Peradeniya, Peradeniya. In the left top hand corner of the envelope, please indicate “APPLICATION FOR ETHICS REVIEW”.
  • One soft copy of Parts I, II and III of the Application Form (in MS Word format) and all Supporting Documents (in PDF format) need to be emailed to cecar@vet.pdn.ac.lk.
  • Correspondence from the Chair, Committee for Ethical Clearance on Animal Research will be addressed to the Principal Investigator of the application.
  • For both undergraduate and postgraduate student research projects; the supervisor of the student should be designated as the Principal Investigator.
  • Applications from Principal Investigators based overseas will only be considered if the project is conducted with a local Co-Investigator/s based in (an) institution/s in Sri Lanka who take equal responsibility for conduct of the study and who will appear as co-author/s in any publication arising out of the study. If the Principal Investigator is based overseas, please designate a local Co-Investigator as Co-Investigator 1 in Part II of the Application Form. In such a situation, all correspondence will be with the local Co-Investigator.
  • Once you have been informed of the Application Number of your application, please quote it in all further correspondence.
  • All email correspondence with the Chair, CECAR, should be addressed to cecar@vet.pdn.ac.lk
