Research Overview

The research activities of the faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science encompass large area of interests covering improvement of farm animal production and health, control of zoonotic disease, well being of the pet animals, production and health of the aquatic animal species, alleviation of human wild animal conflict, quality assurance of food of animal origin and development of rapid diagnostic tool for animal diseases.

The research programme of the faculty is funded by national and international organizations including International Atomic Energy Agency, Euro-Asia link programme, Canadian government, Council for Agriculture Research policy (CARP), National Research Council (NRC), National Science Foundation (NSF) and the University of peradeniya.

The researches interested in the animal production have concentrated their efforts to use modern biotechnologies and molecular techniques in the enhancement of animal production. New diagnostic techniques and treatment protocols have immerged from the efforts of clinicians who have studied the pet and farm animals. Diagnosis and control of zoonotic diseases is the major focus of some researches in the faculty where important discoveries have made in this subject. The studies conducted at the Center for Aquatic Animal Disease Diagnosis and Research of the Faculty are mainly on the bacterial and viral pathogens affecting the aquatic species. Inter disciplinary approach of studies on management, feeding and physiology of elephant is the research strategy used by a group of researches in the Faculty who are interested in management and conservation of wildlife. Quality assurance food commodities, particularly those of animal origin through monitoring of residues and bacterial pathogens is the focus of one of the laboratory of the faculty, the activities of which has been nationally recognized.
