About the Department

The Department of Veterinary Public Health and Pharmacology which was established in 2004 is the youngest department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. The major subjects offered by the department for undergraduates are Veterinary Public Health, Veterinary Pharmacology and Food Technology and Quality Assurance. In addition, the department coordinates subjects such as Statistics, Economics, Computer Literacy and English. Under the new five-year curriculum, the department offers a new subject namely Professional Studies for veterinary undergraduates with an aim of improving communication, leadership and other soft skills. Furthermore, the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Pharmacology carries out research activities whose discoveries have been translated into economically and socially viable innovations. The laboratories of the department are well equipped with latest equipment obtained through several national and international research grants. Recently, the department received an international grant that was worth over 100 million rupees in value. The Food Safety and Quality Assurance Laboratory (FSQAL) of the department is the first ISO 17025 accredited laboratory in the entire university system in Sri Lanka. This laboratory is specialized for determining veterinary drugs residues and mycotoxins in food. Also, the department has a well-equipped Microbiological Laboratory for microbiological diagnostic services.

To be the leading focal point imparting high quality academic programmes and undertaking research in the specific areas of Veterinary Public Health, Food Technology & Quality Assurance and Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology.

Mission

To ensure animal welfare, occupational health and safety while conserving biodiversity and attempt to implement early diagnostic methods in emerging zoonotic diseases, monitoring food borne pathogens and chemical residues in order to safeguard the public and consumers of food of animal origin.
