AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON QUALITY ASSURANCE ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMME REVIEW
An awareness programme on quality assurance activities and progamme review was conducted for the academic staff of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science by the quality assurance cell of faculty on 11th September 2017. Prof. Prasad Sethunga, Director, Internal Quality Assurance Unit, Peradeniya University and Prof. Kalyani Perara, Former Consultant of QAAC of UGC participated as resource personnel.
At this workshop, Prof. Prasad Sethunga, made a presentation on ‘Introduction to QA and What is IQAU?’. In his presentation, Prof. Sethunga elaborated the Quality Assurance (QA) activities recommended for the Universities by the University Grant Commission and how University of Peradeniya carrying out the QA activities through Internal Quality Assurance Unit (IQAU) of the university and the Quality Assurance Cells of the Faculties. Workshop on Enhancing the Team Work Skills
A one-day workshop on Enhancing the team work skill for the non-academic staff of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science was held on 31st August 2017 under the theme of ‘Ma Nomathi Api’ (‘We without me’) at the auditorium of the Administrative Building of the faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. The workshop was organized by the Quality Assurance Cell of the faculty and Dr. Chalinda Beneragama, Director, Agriculture Education Unit of Faculty of Agriculture served as the resource person.
The morning session of the workshop was devoted in learning the concepts and importance of the communication and team work, while identifying the strengths and weaknesses of individuals targeting the progress of the faculty. In the afternoon sessions, participants performed few group activities by applying the theoretical knowledge gained during the morning session. All the participants enjoyed the workshop.

Conference and Workshop
Conference & workshop on" Identification & Documentation of Veterinary Extension needs for Dairy sector in Sri Lanka", was held on 15th -16th August at the Oak-Ray Regency Kandy.Prof. Upul B. Dissanayake, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya was the Chief Guest of the Conference. The conference and workshop was organized by the Faculty of Vet. Medicine & Animal Science in collaboration with Massey University, New Zealand and funded by the New Zealand Aid programme. The Keynote speech on "New Vet UG curriculum and the opportunities to engage with dairy sector" was done by Prof. Prof. H.Abeygunawardena, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya. Professors Danny Donaghy and Hamish Gow were participated as the Resource persons to the workshop. Dr. Anil Pushpakumara coordinated the event which was attended by more than 150 participants from different strata of dairy industry.

A Workshop on Leadership and Organizational Change was conducted by the Veterinary Medical Education (VMEU) unit in collaboration with University of California Davis (UC Davis), USA. Prof. Michael S. Wilkes, Professor of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, and Prof. John Pascoe, Executive Associate Dean, School of Veterinary Medicine were the Resource Personals from UC Davis. Seventeen academic members representing the health science faculties of Medicine, Dental sciences, Allied Health Sciences and Veterinary Medicine & Animal Science participated in this program. The program was held from 13th-17th of March at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. Dr. L.G.S.Lokugalapatti (Director of VMEU) organized the event and Drs. Saumya Wickramasinghe and Eranda Indrajith coordinated the program. Funding for air fare and accommodation of resource personals were provided by Academic without Borders, USA.
The five day long program focused on practical and conceptual framework relevant to the health professions and provided the essentials that a current or prospective leader requires in order to lead themselves and others, as well as to lead positive change within their program or institution.

Department of Farm Animal Production and Health of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science Receives a mega grant from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for “Improving Livelihoods Through Dairy Cattle Production: Women Farmers’ Empowerment”
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has awarded a mega grant of €400,000 to the Department of Farm Animal Production and Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the University of Peradeniya for “Improving Livelihoods Through Dairy Cattle Production: Women Farmers’ Empowerment”. The project aims to identify and empower women dairy farmers of the North Central Province. Farmers will be provided with dairy calves generated through Embryo Transfer Technologies including Multiple Ovulation and Embryo Transfer (MOET) and Ultra Sound guided Ovum Pick. The project also focuses on genetic characterization of high milk producing cows in Sri Lanka and helping the Veterinary Teaching Farm for development of infrastructure facilities for farmer training. The department has all the facilities and know-how to produce cattle, goat and sheep embryo production, freezing and transfer. This project is spearheaded by Drs. Basil Alexander, L.G.S. Lokugalappatti, M.L.A.N.R. Deepani and Chanaka Rabel.
On 25th February 2016, the Vice Chancellor of University of Peradeniya Professor Upul Dissanayake and the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Massey University, New Zealand, Professor Ray Goar, signed an agreement to upgrade the veterinary education in Sri Lanka in the presence of the Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Governor of the Central Province, the Chief Minister of Central Provincial Council and other dignitaries. Under this agreement, the New Zealand government will provide 2.1 million New Zealand dollars to upgrade the veterinary curriculum in par with international standards, to facilitate student exchange between the two universities, to train academic staff of the faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and to provide postgraduate opportunities to the young staff. This collaboration will be carried out under the supervision of World Organization of Animal Health (OIE) as a twining project and is the second such projects in the world. The duration of the current project is five years with the possibility of renewing for another five years and extending the activities to other faculties of the Peradeniya University.
A set of orthopaedic surgical appliances was donated to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital by Lions Club Athurigiriya.
The MVSc (Animal Reproduction) program 2016 cycle was commenced on 30th January 2016 for veterinarians.The Dean and the representatives of the Department of Animal Production and Health and members of the Faculty were attended for the inaugural session. The course is offered as a one year taught course or as a 2 year course with a research component. Twenty candidates have attended the opening session and 27 applications were received for this course. The course will have more clinical and hands on training in animal reproduction with the concept of "Learning by doing". The course coordinators are planing to offer a MVSc course in the field of Poultry Management and Health in the near future.

A revised version of Master of Veterinary Science in Animal Reproduction (Theriogenology) is offered by the Department of Farm Animal Production and Health (DFAPH) of the FVMAS for the year 2016 cycle.
